End Starts Black Friday Sale

image

End just started their Black Friday sale. Much like Mr. Porter, the selection here is massive. The UK retailer carries everything from niche Japanese labels to old British names favored by traditionalists and fashion enthusiasts alike. They’re widely known for their limited sneaker drops, but I also love them for their general casualwear. You can find labels such as Nigel Cabourn, Inverallan, and Orslow here, as well as more contemporary brands such as Maison Margiela.

For Black Friday, they’re offering 20% off with the checkout code BLACKFRIDAY. That may not sound like much, but the prices here are already about 20% lower than what you’ll find in the US (they discount for VAT, but that deduction is already included in the listed prices). Better still, the code stacks on already-discounted items in the sale section, which will give you the best deals.

Some of my favorite things here include the textured knitwear. There are some lofty Shetlands from brands such as Jamieson’s and Howlin’ by Morrison, the second of which uses old, traditional Scottish knitting techniques for new and youthful designs. Inverallan is a cult favorite for their hefty, cabled cardigans and Arans; SNS Herning makes unique bobble-stitch knitwear that you can layer under rugged coats. Just be sure to size up on those Herning sweaters – they fit very slim.

Eight Favorite Black Friday Sales

image

Black Friday sales are upon us. Every year, I roundup some of my favorites both here and at Put This On (we’ll have a comprehensive list of every worthwhile sale later this week, on Friday). Some of my favorite stores, however, are getting a jump on things. Many have started their Black Friday promotions already, with discounts going as deep as 50% off. From Mr. Porter to No Man Walks Alone to East Dane, here are eight early-bird sales I think are pretty great.

Mr. Porter: Up to 30% Off Select Items

Mr. Porter’s massive selection has put them in everyone’s orbit. Whether you favor classic tailored clothing, Japanese workwear, or oversized, minimalist contemporary garb, Mr. Porter likely carries more than a handful of brands for you.

Unionmade’s Finally Fall Sale

image

I suppose one of the advantages of fall weather coming late is you get to take advantage of sales right when you actually want to wear heavy coats and knitwear. Today, Unionmade started their mid-season promotion. You can take 20% off almost anything with the checkout code FINALLYFALL. The only exclusions I see are Aldens, Il Bisonte, Birkenstock, and already marked-down items.

The discount isn’t that deep, but it looks like the store has loosened their return policy. Mid-season sale purchases can now be returned, whereas Unionmade typically runs their end-of-season promotions on a final sale basis. That makes it a bit safer to take a chance on something. Some notable items I found:

  • Levi’s Vintage Clothing: Levi’s Vintage Clothing recycles designs from the company’s expansive archive. I particularly like this hardy, loosely woven, red plaid shirt, which looks like it would layer well under rugged jackets. Their straight-legged 1947 501s are also great. The cut is slim, but forgiving, with a mid-rise that works with everything from sport coats to casualwear.
  • Kapital: This Japanese brand reworks folk clothing from around the world, producing things in odd fits and heavily patched up materials. I love their Ring Coat, for example, which is something like a love child between a Japanese kimono and an American army jacket. It’s oversized and enveloping, and will make you feel a bit cozier on a cold winter day.
  • Chimala: Subtler than Kapital, but more detailed than LVC, Chimala makes vintage-inspired workwear that looks like it’s been pulled out of the best thrift stores. Their chambray is one of my favorite casual button-ups. I also like this season’s canvas hunting coat, even if it’s clearly designed to only help you hunt for compliments.

For more discounts, you can check out Unionmade’s sale section. Just note those are final sale and the code doesn’t stack.

No Man Walks Alone Anniversary Sale

image

No Man Walks Alone is an advertiser on this site, but also one of my favorite stores. Greg, the company’s founder (who can be seen pictured above), simply has great taste in both tailored clothing and casualwear. Guys who are used to wearing suits during the workweek can find themselves at a loss on how to dress casually. Similarly, men who know how to dress casually can sometimes be confused on where to pick up a good suit. No Man Walks Alone is one of those rare stores that can serve both types of people.

This weekend also marks their fourth year in business, so they’re celebrating with a five-day sale. Take 20% off anything with the checkout code FOURTH. Unlike No Man Walks Alone’s end-of-season sales, these mid-season promotions allow for returns, which makes it safer to take a chance on something. Here are ten things I think are particularly worth a closer look:

End’s Spring Sale Starts

image

When it rains, it pours. End-of-season sales are coming down this week, with the newest one being from End – a UK-based shop that carries a range of inventory rivaling Mr. Porter’s. At the moment, you can take 20% off with the checkout code VIPSALE. That might not sound like much, but remember the prices here are already about 20% lower than US-based boutiques (thanks to automatic VAT discounts). If your order is worth less than $800, they’ll arrive duty-free. Shipping is also free on orders over $250.

Since the inventory is so large, your best bet is to scan through the site’s list of brands. Some that I think are notable:

  • ArkAir: ArkAir is the civilian-wing of an old English company, Arktis, which has been providing standard-issue military wear to special forces around the world since 1985. Over the years, they’ve sold to everyone from the French Foreign Legion to UK’s Royal Marines. ArkAir is inspired by those original military jackets, but the clothes are cut in a way that makes them practical for civilian use. Best of all is the price. With jackets nowadays commonly landing north of $500, these hover around $250. With the checkout code, that brings them to $199.
  • Barbour: One of the best times to get a Barbour jacket is during End’s promotions. Being that prices here are, again, lower than most places, the 20% discount just makes them even more affordable. Along with core-line models, such as the Beaufort and Bedale, you can find things such as the Ashby (which is basically the Bedale, but with a slimmer body and longer sleeves). See my Barbour Buyer’s Guide here.

Mr. Porter Launches Spring Sale

image

Mr. Porter always has the most exciting sales, and they just discounted a wide range of their spring/ summer stock by as much as 50%. I picked up a Drake’s scarf, linen Margaret Howell sweater, and some Orslow washed jeans (the 107 fit is great if you want something on the skinnier side, but with a higher rise than APC’s New Standards). The nubuck RM Williams Chelsea boots were also tempting.

If you’re reading this Monday night, know that some of the sales inventory is still being added. Given how quickly things sell out, however, you may want to browse the site now, then check back in the morning. You can use Mr. Porter’s filters to narrow down the inventory or go through their list of brands. If you’d like some suggestions, however, here are some things I think are particularly special:

  • Eidos: A terrific Italian-inspired casualwear line. The topcoat I bought from them last season has become one of my favorite outerwear pieces. This spring/ summer, they have some incredible looking Ghruka pants (size up) and cotton knitwear. See Rubinacci for more Ghurka-styled trousers.
  • Camoshita: If you’ve ever admired Yasuto Kamoshita’s easy-going, louche style, you might want to take a look at his line. His shirts and polos are especially good this season.
  • Drake’s: Do they need any introduction? One of the best men’s accessories brands in the world. The spring scarves are especially nice.
  • Chimala: This Japanese brand makes things that feel like they’ve been dug out your favorite vintage shop. The clothes often fit nice and loose, but in a way that’s flattering, and there are often interesting pre-distressed details (I promise they’re done tastefully). One of my favorite workwear brands.
  • Kapital: Do you want to look like a wandering hobo pirate in some post-apocalyptic world? If so, Kapital is for you! Not the easiest brand to wear, but certainly fun. (I’m actually wearing a Kapital Aloha shirt while typing this).
  • Valstar: Civilian-styled A-1 suede jackets from an Italian company that has made their name off this design. Can be worn with either tailored trousers or jeans, which is what makes these so useful. These really come to their own when you layer them over textured knitwear.
  • Velva Sheen: Simple, great t-shirts. The selling point here is that they’re knitted like tubes, so they don’t have any side seams, but they’re really just soft, easy-fitting tees that flatter. Be sure to size up.
  • Battenwear: Something like a surf version of Engineered Garments. Lots of beach parkas, shorts, and camp collar shirts. All done in contemporary cuts that feel more stylish than their baggier American-made counterparts. For something similar, check Arpenteur
  • Inis Meain: One of my favorite knitwear brands. Their sweaters are inspired by archival Irish designs, mostly those that have been worn on the Aran Islands. The quality here is just excellent – a considerable step-up from the Aran companies that mostly sell to tourists.
  • Maison Margiela: If you don’t already have a pair, Margiela’s German Army Trainers are really useful. They’re a little sportier than Common Projects’ Achilles, which in some ways makes them less versatile, but they still go with almost anything short of tailoring.
  • Viberg: You rarely see Vibergs on sale, but Mr. Porter has the Canadian company’s popular service boots and Chelseas discounted by 30%. The service boots in particular are great – to workwear what boat shoes are to prep (I mean that in the best of ways). Just an easy-to-wear, versatile boot if you have rugged clothes in your closet.
  • RM Williams: The iconic Chelsea. Theirs is a wholecut design, which I think looks better than Chelseas with side seams (surprisingly common, even on boots retailing for over $1,000).
  • Gaziano & Girling: A rare sale on Gaziano & Girling shoes. Just note that the lasts here are on the slightly sleeker side of things.
  • Onia and Orlebar Brown: Great for swim shorts. Orlebar Brown’s shorts are made with side tabs, which I think looks nicer than elasticized waists. Onias, however, fit me a little better, so they might also work for you.
  • Jeans: Mr. Porter has some of my favorite jeans. As mentioned above, Orslow’s 107 fit is nice if you want something skinny, but with a manageable rise. Then there’s Our Legacy’s First Cut, which is fuller through the thigh, but has a nice taper below the knees. Finally, LVC’s 1947 501 jeans are a forgiving slim-straight cut. Probably more useful for guys with classic sensibilities, although the wash here might be hard to use with sport coats.

Five Great Memorial Day Sales

image

Memorial Day weekend is here, and before you fire up that grill or go on that camping trip, you might want to check in with some of your favorite stores. It seems like everyone is having a sale this weekend. A roundup of five great sales I was looking at last night:

Ralph Lauren: Ralph Lauren is actually having two sales. One is a stackable promotion, where you can take an extra 30% off already discounted items with the checkout code MEMDAY (orders over $125 also qualify for free shipping with the code FREESHIP125). Lots of stuff to browse here, but I think the highlights are in the footwear section, where you can find things such as penny and tassel loafers as low as $200. Just stick to the stuff made in the UK, USA, and Italy – the cheaper stuff from China typically isn’t that great.

They’re also holding their “Designer Sale,” which means select items from their RRL and Purple Label lines have been discounted by as much as 40%. I picked up the vachetta leather bag you see at the top of this post, but I got the last one (sorry). If you’re up for a splurge, this suede Purple Label aviator jacket looks nice.

Ten of the Best Winter Sales

image

End-of-season sales can be a great time to nab something nice, but there are so many good stores nowadays that it can feel overwhelming to sort through everyone’s inventory. Since there are dozens of winter sales going on right now, I thought I’d round up some of my favorites. Most notable are megastores such as Mr. Porter and End, both of which start their promotions today, but there are also tons of great deals at smaller boutiques.

Mr. Porter: Mr. Porter is always the highlight of every sale season. Discounts tend to start around 30% to 50% off, and then go deeper over the next few weeks. The problem is that things tend to move fast, and very little is left after a few days. On the upside, the selection is amazing.

To get through the inventory quickly, make use of the site’s navigation filters, where you can hone-in on things by brand and size. If you need suggestions, I think Nigel Cabourn, Engineered Garments, and Chimala are particularly good for workwear; Eidos and Margaret Howell for contemporary casualwear (those Howell duffle coats and fishtail parkas look amazing); and William Lockie for cashmere knits.

Great Brooks Brothers Sale

image

This might be one of the best Brooks Brothers sales I’ve seen in years. First, select items have been discounted between 25% and 40%, which on face value isn’t that unusual. Except until the end of Saturday, you can knock another 25% off with the checkout code DECBC16. That brings the total discount as low as 55% off retail.

The discounts get even lower if you pay with a gift card. At the moment, they’re offering a free $25 eGift card for every $150 eGift card you purchase. To get the bonuses, you have to purchase each of the $150 eGift cards separately. The credits will be immediately emailed to you and you can apply them to any purchase, which makes all the discounts above stackable.

Note: customers are limited to five $150 eGift card purchases, and apparently you can only apply three of the $175 eGift card credits to any one online order. But shipping is just $1, so you use all five in separate multi-item orders.

Black Friday Sales Continue

image

I don’t think I remember any Black Friday season being this good. Six more great sales started last night. There’s End, Meyvn, and Club Monaco for casualwear (the last of which now includes third-party brands); Skoaktiebolaget and Pediwear for some amazing shoe deals; and The Hanger Project for classic men’s accessories. Running through the stores, here are some highlights:

End: One of my favorite shops for casualwear. The selection here rivals Mr. Porter’s and, for Black Friday, they’ve discounted almost everything 20% off. The promotion is automatically applied at checkout and it stacks on already-discounted items in the sale section. Like with Mr. Porter, I think the easiest way to tackle this is by browsing their list of brands, although if you need some suggestions, here are some I really like:
