Mr. Porter Winter Sale Starts

image

The best sales event of every season is always at Mr. Porter. Where else, after all, can you find discounted Edward Green shoes and Drake’s accessories sitting alongside niche Japanese labels and American workwear? Tonight, they started their end-of-season promotion, where you can find select fall/ winter stock on sale for about 50% off.

The selection here is huge, and things tend to move quickly, so there are three good rules of thumbs to follow. First, if you’re on the fence about something, it’s almost always worth buying now and trying the item in-person. Mr. Porter has a hassle-free return policy, with free delivery both ways, so you risk little. Relatedly, since other shoppers are often operating with the same logic, you may want to check back often. Throughout the next couple of weeks, new sizes will pop in and out as customers return items. Thirdly, since the inventory here is so large, I find it’s often best to hit the sale section and sort by categories and sizes. This way, you may come across a serendipitous deal that you would have otherwise missed if you were just looking for brands.

That said, there are some notable brands here. Inis Meain’s sweaters are expensive, even with the discount, but absolutely exquisite and a joy to wear. Engineered Garments, Blue Blue Japan, and Kapital are personal favorites for workwear; SNS Herning is great textured knitwear you can layer under heavy coats (be sure to size up). I’m also pleasantly surprised to see how many footwear brands are included in the promotion – RM Williams, Common Projects, John Lobb, George Cleverley, and Visvim among them. Here are ten things I think are especially worth highlighting.

Eight Stellar Black Friday Sales

image

Even when it’s online and you can shop from the comfort of your own home, Black Friday still feels like a mad dash to find the best deals. Over at Put This On, we’re rounding up the best of Black Friday promotions. The list is massive, with the number of sales going into the hundreds, and we’ll be adding to the list over the weekend as we learn of new promotions. For those who want something more manageable, I’ve pulled together some of my favorites in these two posts. Combine those with the ten sales listed below and you have what I think are the nineteen best Black Friday sections this year.

Unionmade: 20% Off Orders Over $250, Code BLACKFRIDAY

Unionmade is a great shop for workwear, heritage brands, and hard-to-find Japanese imports. They carry everything from the sort of slim-straight jeans a guy can wear with sport coats, to more experimental lines such as Kapital. And in the last year, they’ve branched out to more contemporary labels such as Studio Nicholson and Deveaux

Mr. Porter Starts Black Friday Sale

Mr. Porter’s massive selection puts them in everyone’s orbit. Whether you favor classic tailored clothing, Japanese workwear, or oversized, minimalist contemporary garb, Mr. Porter likely carries more than a handful of brands for you.

Today, Mr. Porter started their Black Friday promotion, where you can take up to 30% off select items. I’m also pleasantly surprised to see how many footwear brands are included in the promotion – RM Williams, Common Projects, John Lobb, George Cleverley, Yuketen, and Visvim among them.

Given the scope and size of their inventory, your best bet is to filter by sizing and brands to see what you like. That said, here are ten items that I think are worth highlighting.

Ten Early Black Friday Sales

image

Black Friday sales are upon us. Every year, I roundup some of my favorites both here and at Put This On (we’ll have a comprehensive list of every worthwhile sale later this week, on Friday). Some stores, however, are getting a jump on things. Many have already started their Black Friday promotions, with discounts going as deep as 50% off. There’s even a topcoat below for just $150. From affordable workwear to contemporary casualwear, here are nine really good early-bird specials.

J. Crew: 50% Off, Code TGIF

J. Crew’s never-ending sales have become a running joke on Twitter, but I also think their Wallace & Barnes line is one of the best values in menswear right now. Their clothes have a more boutique feel than J. Crew’s mainline, are made from better materials, and are inspired by the company’s vintage design archive. Wallace & Barnes is great even at full retail, but with the current promotion, it almost feels like you’re shopping in 2009 again, before fashion prices were launched into outer space. This indigo moleskin chore coat, for example, is just $130. Their autumnal Fair Isle sweaters are $74; terrycloth sweatshirt $40; heavyweight flannel and hearty herringbone work shirt less than $50. This olive green, cotton-hemp shirt is kind of basic, but also just $27.

No Man Walks Alone Anniversary Sale

image

No Man Walks Alone is an advertiser on this site, but also one of my favorite stores. In the last ten years, the average menswear shopper has become a lot more sophisticated – they know just as much about Neapolitan tailoring as they do about directional casualwear. No Man Walks Alone serves that kind of customer. They have classic suits and sport coats, but also interesting clothes for the weekend. It’s one of the few shops where a guy can pick up a wardrobe for almost any part of his life.

This weekend marks their fifth year of doing business, and to celebrate, they’re holding a sale. For the next five days, you can take 20% off any order with the checkout code 5YEAR. The code even works on already-discounted sale items. Here are ten things I think are particularly worth a look:

Eight Terrific Mid-Season Sales

image

Are you proud of yourself for not having splurged too much this season? Well reward yourself by spending all of your savings on these mid-season sales. At least that’s what I did last night, picking up an RRL t-shirt, some Lemaire trousers, and a few bags of coffee beans (had to re-up). There are some really good mid-season sales right now, ranging from Edward Green shoes to Pure Blue Japan flannels to Eidos suits. Some notables:

Brooks Brothers: Extra 25% off Clearance Items

Take an additional 25% off already-discounted items in the sale section. I mostly shop here just for the shoes nowadays, many of which are made by Allen Edmonds, Alden, Crockett & Jones, and Alfred Sargent (just look for descriptions that say made-in-USA or made-in-England). With the discount, you can snag these suede wingtips for $149; penny loafers for $239; and Red Wing chukkas for $183. Solid deals.

Highlights from Unionmade’s Sale

image

Unionmade is a great shop for workwear, heritage brands, and hard-to-find Japanese imports. They carry everything from Levi’s to Kapital, but the clothes come together in a way that can be roughly described as a classic, casual West Coast aesthetic. There are slim-straight jeans for guys who normally wear sport coats, as well as a huge selection of casualwear drawing militaria, workwear, and neo-retro outdoor gear.

From now until Monday, they’re also having an early spring sale. Take 25% off all orders with the checkout code -25FINALSALE (be sure to include the minus sign, which is easy to miss if you copy-and-paste). As the code suggests, all purchases made with the code are final sale, so be sure to check measurements. The code does stack, however, on already discounted items in the sale section, although it excludes anything from Alden and Birkenstock. Some highlights I think are worth a look:

Mr. Porter’s Sale Starts

image

Everyone’s favorite sale of the season, Mr. Porter’s, just started. The sale isn’t advertised on the homepage yet, but you can see prices already marked down on select items (just browse around). If history is any indication, more items will be marked down as the night moves on. And by tomorrow morning, the entire sales inventory will be up.

Things here tend to move fast – very fast – but I’ll be updating this post in the next half hour with some of my favorite finds. If you’re having trouble accessing the sale, use a browser other than Google Chrome. For whatever reason, Chrome occasionally glitches on Mr. Porter’s site.

Some favorite finds so far:

Five Great End of Season Sales

image

The next week or two are going to be big for end-of-season sales. Some are just starting to roll in, although at least one store (End) is on their second round of markdowns. I’ll be rounding up some of my favorite sales over the next week, but here are five this weekend worth checking out.

End: The thing to remember about End is that they’re located in the UK, which means that listed prices tend to be about ~20% lower than what you’ll find at most other shops (since they automatically deduct for VAT). Add to that their current 50% off promotion and things become pretty sweet.

Some of my favorite brands here include Nigel Cabourn, Engineered Garments, Blue Blue JapanBattenwear, and Levi’s Vintage Clothing. Margiela’s German Army Trainers are also on sale, along with a ton of other shoes from Common Projects, Buttero, Spalwart, and Yuketen. For chunky, textured knitwear you can layer under casual coats, check out Howlin by Morrison and SNS Herning. The second is especially good if you have a lot of workwear in your wardrobe, although you’ll want to size up. SNS Herning runs pretty slim.

Ten Black Friday Sale Highlights

image

We’re doing a Black Friday sales roundup at Put This On. The list is massive, reaching into the hundreds of stores, and we’ll be updating the list from now until Sunday as we learn of new promotions. For those who want something more manageable, I thought I’d put together ten sales from the list that I think are worth specially highlighting. Combine this with this past week’s posts on other Black Friday deals and you have nineteen Black Friday sales that I think are worth checking out.

Marcus Malmborg: Up to 70% off Eidos

As you may have heard, Antonio Ciongoli is leaving Eidos as its Creative Director after next season’s collection. The line will be taken over by Simon Spurr, who’s known for his sleeker NYC sense of style, while Antonio is moving on to do a new men’s line for Roller Rabbit. Word is that the line will be inspired by East Indian traditions, including hand block printing, which I find really exciting.
