The next week or two are going to be big for end-of-season sales. Some are just starting to roll in, although at least one store (End) is on their second round of markdowns. I’ll be rounding up some of my favorite sales over the next week, but here are five this weekend worth checking out.
End: The thing to remember about End is that they’re located in the UK, which means that listed prices tend to be about ~20% lower than what you’ll find at most other shops (since they automatically deduct for VAT). Add to that their current 50% off promotion and things become pretty sweet.
Some of my favorite brands here include Nigel Cabourn, Engineered Garments, Blue Blue Japan, Battenwear, and Levi’s Vintage Clothing. Margiela’s German Army Trainers are also on sale, along with a ton of other shoes from Common Projects, Buttero, Spalwart, and Yuketen. For chunky, textured knitwear you can layer under casual coats, check out Howlin by Morrison and SNS Herning. The second is especially good if you have a lot of workwear in your wardrobe, although you’ll want to size up. SNS Herning runs pretty slim.
Your best bet with End, however, is to just filter for sizes in the sale section and comb through the inventory. The selection here is massive, comparable to Mr. Porter’s, which means it’s easy to stumble upon good deals. There are some Barbour jackets in there, for example, selling for between $85 and $175.
Pediwear: You won’t find well-styled product photos at Pediwear, but you’ll often find some of the best online prices for well-made shoes. They carry some great footwear brands, such as Carmina (an advertiser on this site), Crockett & Jones, and Tricker’s. That said, you’ll want to do some research. While most of the shoes here are well made, some leave a little to be desired. Within Loake’s massive selection, for example, only their 1880 collection is Goodyear welted and constructed from high-end leathers.
For their end-of-season sale, Pediwear has select shoes at 30% off. There are some great things here from Alfred Sargent and RM William starting around $350 (including the RM Williams Chelsea boots pictured above). Note that the listings here are in UK sizes, so be sure to convert if you’re in the US.
No Man Walks Alone: An advertiser on this site, but also one of my favorite stores. No Man Walks Alone isn’t having an end-of-season sale, but they’re offering all of their outerwear at a 25% discount (just use the code WINTER25). I love everything here, but Kaptain Sunshine and Camoshita are worth highlighting. Kaptain Sunshine remixes classic Americana in a way that feels fun and interesting – sort of like LL Bean, but a lot more stylish. I bought their traveler coat earlier this season (modeled above by nhojinn). It’s one of those coats you can throw over the simplest of outfits – slim jeans and a chunky sweater – and still look great. The collar flips up nicely, there’s a patched ticket pocket at the hip, and the coat gives a nice A-frame silhouette when worn.
I also really like Kaptain Sunshine’s winter bomber and oversized parka, both unique takes on workwear that would look great with jeans or even flannel trousers. Camoshita’s burgundy duffle coat would be nice for an Ivy Style look. Lastly, Valstar’s citified A-1 jackets are useful if you want a more casual alternative to sport coats. Simon Crompton at Permanent Style recently did a good post on three ways that bomber can be worn.
Nitty Gritty: This Stockholm-based store specializes in contemporary casualwear, but they also carry a lot of things that I think can fit into almost anyone’s wardrobe. The clothes are geographically neutral and often draw on Americana and workwear classics.
I really dig this season’s selection from Engineered Garments and Margaret Howell (I’d pick up this fishtail parka if I didn’t already have one from Ten C). I’ve also come around to this New Balance M990v4 sneaker. A bit technical looking, but in a good way, I think. Spalwart is nice if you want a retro-styled runner; Paraboot makes a tremendous looking hiking boot; And Wander is something like a more interesting version of Patagonia; Orslow’s fatigues can be a nice alternative to jeans; and this Kattermusen backpack has an interesting design.
Club Monaco: Even with the sales, some of the prices above can be pretty high. For something more affordable, I think it’s hard to beat Club Monaco. I wish some of the topcoats were longer, and I still think you’re better off with a merino sweater for less than $300 than cashmere. But if you shop smartly, you can find some great things here – military-style field jackets for $140, Donegal knitwear for $70. There are also some third-party merchandise on sale, such as Gitman Vintage oxford shirts for $83, Cookson & Clegg field jackets for $210, and suede Golden Bear leather jackets for $425.
