Announcing a New Menswear Magazine

Men of Habit is launching a print magazine for Spring/ Summer 2012. Chris Callis, the founder of Men of Habit, is working with a New York publishing house and has assembled a team of writers and photographers. I’m incredibly proud to say that he’s asked me to be a writer and I feel honored to be part of a project that Bruce Boyer and F.E. Castleberry will be working on. How I was able to get in there, I have no idea.
If you enjoy magazines such as The Rake, Men’s Ex, or Leon, I think you’ll be really excited about this project. There will be articles about Savile Row and Italian craftsman, as well as personal style portraits of some of the menswear industry’s bests. The cover price will be reasonable $14.99, which will make this a nice affordable collectible.
I’ve long had some ideas for “big stories” I want to write, but to be honest, sometimes I’m hesitant about putting them on a blog. There is just so much information on the internet that it’s easy for something to be quickly buried. Sometimes I’ll spend hours putting together a post (my interview with Gianluca Migliarotti, for example, probably took me about 20 hours worth of work). Once you post it on a blog, however, it’s at the bottom of people’s RSS feeds within five hours, and on page ten within a day. Blogs are great, but sometimes they can feel so ephemeral.
A magazine, on the other hand, is tangible and can be archived for reference. I can’t speak for other people working on the project, of course, but I know that this definitely inspires me to put out my best work. I’ve already written up two pages of ideas and have pitched them to Chris. All of them involve a lot of research, but I think in the end, they’ll amount to more meaningful and thoughtful reading for enthusiasts to enjoy.
Chris is currently trying to fundraise $8,000 through IndieGoGo for the project. The money is going to go towards completing the layout and design of the magazine. If you’re interested in being an early supporter, go to this page and donate. Otherwise, stay tuned for the release of what’s sure to be one of the best menswear magazines around.
