Menswear (Reality) TV

LAS of Sartorially Inclined found this amazing video that features Yasuto Kamoshita, the creative director behind United Arrows. It’s shot by Lee Hyun, the photographer behind Il Gusto Del Signore. The film takes you through Kamoshita’s day as he visits South Korea for Seoul’s Fashion Week, which just happened a few months ago. The man is clearly bad to the bone marrows. The earth has one sun, but he walks with two shadows.

Perhaps I shouldn’t point it out, otherwise it might taint your eye, but one of the things you’ll might not notice is how some of these very natural looks are actually very non-conservative. For example, it might completely pass by you that his brightly colored gold and red tie has a back blade about four or five inches too long. There’s also some brightly colored Hermes scarves and a cotton-linen blend roll neck, two things most American men shy away from, yet I think they look awesome here. For me, the test of being well dressed isn’t whether something necessarily conforms to a set of rigid rules, but whether something looks good. People who aren’t into menswear generally get that, but neophytes are incredibly shrill and narrow minded when it comes to rules. It takes a while, from what I’ve seen, for people to be comfortable enough with clothes to get back to an aesthetic-driven judgement. It’s better to look interesting than correct, in my opinion.

Of course, that doesn’t mean rules aren’t helpful, or that you should walk around looking like Lapo Elkann. But it does mean that just because something doesn’t adhere to orthodoxy doesn’t mean it isn’t good. Non-conservative just has to be done right.

Once you’re done watching that video, check out United Arrows’ other videos. One shows a cover shoot for Brutus and features another Japanese menswear superstar - the United Arrows co-founder, Hirofumi Kurino. There’s also a feature on Roxana Altamirano of Nerd Boyfriend. That one is especially enjoyable because it’s in English, so you actually know what’s being said. All in all, some excellent menswear reality TV today.

Addendum: A kind reader, Michael, just clarified for me that Lee Hyun was probably not the person who shot this video, but rather United Arrows. Lee Hyun apparently just showed Kamoshita around Seoul while he was in town.
