The Most Affordable Double Monks Around

A reader named Sebastian emailed me yesterday and asked for my thoughts on these double monks. They’re made in Spain and sold by a German company named Shoe Passion. They’re also the more affordable double monks I’ve ever come across. With the Euro so beaten, an American could buy these for about $200 (after discounting for VAT).

The company advertises their shoes as being Goodyear welted, but I have strong suspicions that the leather quality isn’t that great (perhaps even being corrected grain). Having owned and worn both Loakes and Edward Greens, I can tell you that the quality of the leather is more important than whether something is Goodyear or Blake/ Rapid constructed. If the uppers look terrible after two or three years, who cares if something can be resoled?

Still, these are $200 and the shape is pleasing. I recommend saving up for something better, but for some, $200 is saving up for something better, and it’s good to have options.

Unfortunately, Shoe Passion doesn’t ship to the United States at the moment, but they’ve told me they plan to soon. Perhaps in the next four months or so, they said.

Update: Looks like they’ll ship to the US now. You can email service@shoepassion.com for ordering information or contact them here.
