Heritage Videos With Substance

As part of the “heritage brand” revival, there have been an endless number of videos produced on manufacturing. Most of them, unfortunately, are quite superficial. Buzzwords such as “heritage,” “craftsmanship,” and “quality” are thrown about, moody music is put over slow motion footage, and some grizzled man will talk about how much he likes his job. They aren’t anything more than smart marketing videos in an age where TV commercials have ceased to be effective.

Every once in a while, however, there will be something more substantive. For example, The Guardian produced a series of shorts last year on British companies that are still engaged in traditional manufacturing practices. Thirty-seven trades were covered, and the series included everything from coopering (making casks) to stonemasonery.

Perhaps of special interest to readers here is this feature on Drake’s of London. That’s the only one that directly touches on men’s clothing, but there are other subjects that sit close to the subject. For example, there are videos on Simon Benney’s watch cases, William and Son’s gunmaking, and Sheffield’s pocket knives.

The videos are short, but they’re packed with information. You don’t come out of it knowing everything about the craft, of course, but you get a good introduction. Check out the series when you have time.
